Breaking News: Ben Affleck is ‘Batman’ for ‘Man of Steel’ Sequel.

Ben Affleck

Ben Affleck will replace Christian Bale in the Batman-Superman movie that’s scheduled to be released in July 2015.

Warner Bros. made the announcement Thursday.

From the press release announcing the casting:

“Ending weeks of speculation, Ben Affleck has been set to star as Batman, a.k.a. Bruce Wayne. Affleck and filmmaker Zack Snyder will create an entirely new incarnation of the character in Snyder’s as-yet-untitled project—bringing Batman and Superman together for the first time on the big screen and continuing the director’s vision of their universe, which he established in “Man of Steel.” The announcement was made today by Greg Silverman, President, Creative Development and Worldwide Production, and Sue Kroll, President, Worldwide Marketing and International Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures.

“Affleck will star opposite Henry Cavill, who will reprise the role of Superman/Clark Kent. The film will also reunite “Man of Steel” stars Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane.

“In the announcement, Silverman stated, ‘We knew we needed an extraordinary actor to take on one of DC Comics’ most enduringly popular Super Heroes, and Ben Affleck certainly fits that bill, and then some. His outstanding career is a testament to his talent and we know he and Zack will bring new dimension to the duality of this character.’

“Snyder also expressed his excitement about the casting of Affleck, noting, ‘Ben provides an interesting counter-balance to Henry’s Superman. He has the acting chops to create a layered portrayal of a man who is older and wiser than Clark Kent and bears the scars of a seasoned crime fighter, but retain the charm that the world sees in billionaire Bruce Wayne. I can’t wait to work with him.’

“Kroll added, ‘We are so thrilled that Ben is continuing Warner Bros.’ remarkable legacy with the character of Batman. He is a tremendously gifted actor who will make this role his own in this already much-anticipated pairing of these two beloved heroes.’

Affleck has some previous experience as a superhero — he played Daredevil in the 2003 film of the same name.

Disney’s Haunted Mansion for sale

Want to move into a haunted mansion just in time for Halloween? For less than  $1 million, you can.

A live-in replica of Disney’s Haunted Mansion attraction is listed for sale  in Duluth, Ga. for $873,000.  The 10,000-square-foot spooky house has four  stories and seven bedrooms. The ghosts are not included in the deal — except  for the animated hitchhiking ghost scene in one of the home’s six bathrooms.

The owner, Mark Hurt, is a designer and Disney contractor. He built the  replica in 1996 in a gated community and lived there for 16 years with his wife  and son.  The replica matches the exact architecture and every detail of  one of Disney’s most popular attractions.

“He actually measured the real Disney mansion to make sure it was exact,”  says Mark Pianko of Theme Park Connection, a Florida company that specializes in  Disney collectibles. “He went through a lot of great details to make sure it was  authentic.” Theme Park partnered with the owner to market the home.

The house features a “Haunted Mansion” plaque at the front gate, a two-story  library, an elevator and a surprise for guests as they enter the first-floor  bathroom.

Elevator in house“When they start washing their hands, the lights  start to flicker and a ghost appears in the mirror,” Pianko says. “Mark says he  would forget to tell guests about the bathroom and then he would hear screams  and say, ‘Oh, forgot to tell them.'”

Hurt says he is selling the house because he is working on his next project,  a resort-themed house modeled after Disney’s Grand Californian.

The Haunted Mansion has received 45 bids on its eBay listing, which expires  Nov. 1. The offers have not met the seller’s asking price yet.

‘Star Wars’ Returns — ‘Episode 7′ Slated For 2015 And More Movies Planned As Disney Buys Lucasfilm

Disney has just confirmed that it has agreed to acquire George LucasLucasfilm Ltd, and that includes rights to the Star Wars franchise that will now continue on. The companies have targeted a 2015 release for Star Wars: Episode 7, with Episode 8 and Episode 9 to follow as the the long-term plan is to release a new feature every two or three years. “The last Star Wars movie release was 2005’s Revenge Of The Sith– and we believe there’s substantial pent-up demand”, Disney said. The deal also includes rights to the Indiana Jones franchise.

The stock and cash transaction is worth an estimated $4.05 billion, and the companies have scheduled a conference call today to discuss the deal, which was approved by the Disney board and Lucas, the sole Lucasfilm shareholder. (UPDATE: Disney’s Iger: Three New ‘Star Wars’ Movies Mapped Out; TV Plans Too)

As for the new Star Wars installments, the companies said Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy would be executive producer on Episode 7 and any additional Star Wars movies, and Lucas would serve as creative consultant. There was no indication about where the story would pick up, though technically in the franchise’s chronology it would follow Star Wars: Episode 6 — Return Of The Jedi, the third film in the initial trilogy that came out in 1983.

As part of the deal, Kennedy will become president of Lucasfilm, reporting to Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn. Kennedy, who was made Lucasfilm co-chairman June 1 as heir apparent to Lucas, will also serve as the brand manager for Star Wars, whose feature films have earned a total of $4.4 billion in global box to date. That doesn’t take into account the franchise’s massive merchandising clout that Disney CFO Jay Rasulo said will generate in 2012 close to the $215 million in consumer product revenue Marvel had when Disney bought that comics business in 2009.

Disney has built its business under chairman and CEO Bob Iger around such major acquisitions as Marvel, Pixar, ABC and ESPN.

“Lucasfilm reflects the extraordinary passion, vision, and storytelling of its founder, George Lucas,” Iger said in a release announcing the deal. “This transaction combines a world-class portfolio of content including Star Wars, one of the greatest family entertainment franchises of all time, with Disney’s unique and unparalleled creativity across multiple platforms, businesses, and markets to generate sustained growth and drive significant long-term value.”

Disney is paying approximately half of the consideration in cash and issuing approximately 40 million shares at closing based on Disney’s stock price on October 26. Lucasfilm is 100% owned by Lucasfilm chairman and founder Lucas.

“For the past 35 years, one of my greatest pleasures has been to see Star Wars passed from one generation to the next,” said Lucas. “It’s now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers. I’ve always believed that Star Wars could live beyond me, and I thought it was important to set up the transition during my lifetime. I’m confident that with Lucasfilm under the leadership of Kathleen Kennedy, and having a new home within the Disney organization, Star Wars will certainly live on and flourish for many generations to come. Disney’s reach and experience give Lucasfilm the opportunity to blaze new trails in film, television, interactive media, theme parks, live entertainment, and consumer products.”

Lucasfilm’s businesses include live-action film production, consumer products, animation, visual effects, and audio postproduction. Disney also acquires the technologies from the San Francisco-based company, which operates under the names Lucasfilm Ltd., LucasArts, Industrial Light + Magic, and Skywalker Sound.
