The movie ties “Avatar’s” early-morning showings.
Disney’s Tron: Legacy grossed $3.6 million in midnight runs from 2,000 theaters, with Imax theaters providing a record percentage of the gross.
The fanboy tentpole beat out the midnight gross for Avatar, which debuted the same frame a year ago. Avatar‘s midnight tally was $3.5 million.
Imax showings of Tron grossed $1 million, or 29% of the total gross.
Tron debuted in 228 Imax theaters across the country. Several theaters in South Atlantic states that had planned to run the fanboy tentpole were shut because of snow.
Earlier this year, Inception posted midnight grosses of $3 million. Imax gross beat out Imax midnight showings of Avatar, Iron Man 2 and Inception.

TRON BEARBRICK 2010 SDCC VERSION
A Japanese import! Medicom celebrates Comic-Con International with a true fan release. The Tron Be@rbrick harkens back to the original 1981 Tron release by Tomy. Even the blister packaging has been respectfully revised to resemble that of the original release. This is only available to fans at SDCC!

Toy News International announced this week that Spin Masters has two Tron Legacy exclusives set for San Diego Comic Con 2010. First up, there’s a limited edition die-cast replica of Sam Flynn’s light cycle. There will be only 3000 pieces available and each one will retail for $5. Then there’s a static figure of Tron from the original Tron movie and it will come in a very cool-looking package made to look like the Tron arcade game. The figure has a light-up feature on the base that can be activated in or out of the arcade-style packaging. There will only be 1500 pieces and each will retail for $40.
